OERM Signal Project Notes - August 23, 2003

The following items were repaired, installed, or maintained by the "class crew" on August 23/24, 2003 (and the days immediately before and after):

     Signal Garden

Work on the signal garden this weekend consisted of design planning with Barry, Gary, Allen and Ron. Wiring changes, microcontroller port assignments, functionality and programming changes were discussed. Future plans call for the following: September - program changes, October - rewire controller and cabinet.
     Alpine Wig-Wag/Motor Switch

The Hirths have installed a conduit under the mainline roadbed for installation of the replacement cable to the East side WigWag. A broken water line and several other exciting diversions added to the fun of installing it. Temporary wiring has been installed in this new conduit. Permenent cable will be installed soon. Even with the new wire, the East WigWag is seemingly not perfect yet -- more work may be needed.
     Alpine-Middleton Cable Replacement

Progress continues on the Middelton cable project. The ladder "V" rung and cable hook are attached and quite secure. Several strand clamps have been attached to poles and everyone lived to tell about it. The first efforts went rather slowly but speed has picked up as we get use to the equipment and working on the end of a ladder. Hopefully soon the rest of the hardware can be installed and made to string strand. Polly Griffith has helped out quite nicely as support on the ground hoisting up nuts. bolts and tools to my perch. (info from Mike)
     11th St Xing Tie Shoring

The previously located and cut ties were drilled and transported to the site by Allen, Gary and Ron, They were then placed in position and spike with the new long 3 foot "nails". The ballast was then respread behind the new retaining ties and around the signal cabinet.
     Equipment Sorting and Storage

Werner and Paul assisted Gene with sorting of a lot of equipment near the signal shop and transporting it out to the storage areas.

     Signal Document Organizing and Filing

Allen continues to organize, catalog, and file many all of the documents in the Signal Shop.
